BRENTWOOD, N.Y. – The disappearance and subsequent deaths of five current or former students at a New York high school have some questioning the initial police response.
The aunt of one victim says it seemed as though police didn't do enough when Oscar Acosta vanished in May on Long Island. Other community leaders are wondering why authorities didn't raise an alarm sooner about the string of disappearances.
A police spokesman says all missing-person cases are fully investigated. He says the circumstances surrounding a case determine the level of publicity it might receive.
Police say they are stepping up the pressure on the MS-13 street gang as they investigate six homicides since Labor Day in Brentwood.
Police also aren't saying how many other students might still be missing.
