Five people are dead after a wrong way crash in Middleborough, Mass. Monday morning.

State police say it happened in the northbound lanes of Interstate 495 just after midnight.

One person was headed south in the northbound lanes alone, according to police, before colliding with a car that had four "young adults" in it.

In a news conference Monday morning, state police said only one report of a wrong-way driver came in shortly after midnight. Police said the driver likely got on the highway going the wrong way at exit 4, just one up from where the crash occurred.

When the cars collided, police say the car with four Mass. residents in it burst into flames.

Police say an investigation will be launched into whether drugs or alcohol were a factor for the driver to be going the wrong way.
