Kentucky State Police say troopers fatally shot a man who ignored an order to put down his rifle during a domestic call.

Trooper Billy Gregory says in a news release that 38-year-old Kenny Tomblin of Edmonton was shot by troopers early Sunday.

Gregory says a woman told Metcalfe County dispatchers that she and Tomblin had been involved in a physical altercation. A sheriff's deputy encountered Tomblin, who went into his residence, brought out the rifle and approached troopers who had arrived.

Gregory says Tomblin refused to put the rifle down and discharged the weapon. Troopers returned fire, striking him.

The race of the troopers and the suspect weren't known. Gregory didn't immediately respond to an email.

An investigation is continuing.

Edmonton is about 115 miles south of Louisville.
