An elderly Pennsylvania woman convicted of poisoning her son's girlfriend with antifreeze, leaving her near death, has been granted bail following a judge's decision to throw out the convictions.
A Luzerne County judge on Wednesday set bail at $25,000 for 84-year-old Helen Galli, who has said she plans to return home to live with her son.
Galli was sentenced in 2013 to 5½ to 12 years after she was convicted of aggravated assault and reckless endangering. But a judge ruled that Galli's attorney was ineffective for not objecting to testimony that she told her son's girlfriend to consume the antifreeze-laced drink.
Prosecutors are appealing the decision, calling the defense strategy a judgment call. Her trial attorney had argued that the poisoning was a failed suicide attempt.
