CLEVELAND – Three men imprisoned 20 years for a murder they deny committing have been cleared by a judge in Cleveland in a case that unraveled when attorneys learned a prosecutor had hidden reports raising doubt about their guilt.
The judge on Monday declared Laurese Glover, Derrick Wheatt and Eugene Johnson free men.
The men had entered prison as teenagers in 1996 and were released in March 2015 after the judge ruled they deserved a new trial for an East Cleveland fatal shooting. An appeals court in Cleveland upheld the judge's decision in May 2016.
The Cuyahoga (ky-uh-HOH'-guh) County prosecutor's office says it won't pursue the case further.
The case against the men fell apart in 2014 after the Ohio Innocence Project learned the prosecutor told police in 1998 to withhold an investigative file from appellate attorneys.
