Thirty minutes after a New York City man was shot and killed in a bodega in 2007, police arrested a suspect in the case.
Nine years later that same suspect has pleaded guilty to manslaughter.
The New York Times reports Monday (http://nyti.ms/2aLeHpJ ) that Carlos Vega's guilty plea resolves the city's longest unresolved case.
The 33-year-old Vega's brief court appearance caps a nearly decade-long legal saga to resolve Robert Gaston's murder in the Bronx. The newspaper reports Vega saw 12 different judges and was tried three separate times.
The Bronx criminal courts are notoriously slow. In recent years, city officials have vowed to unclog them.
Vega was sentenced to 12 ½ years. The newspaper says that with time served he could leave prison in about a year.
Vega is scheduled to be sentenced on Sept. 6.
