Prosecutors have decided that police in Newport News, Virginia, were justified when they shot and wounded an armed man last January.

In a release Wednesday, police said the Commonwealth Attorney's Office won't seek criminal charges against the officers in the shooting.

It happened after officers responded to a report of a crash and found two men fatally shot in a van. The officers began chasing a man who fit the description of a possible shooter. Police spokesman Lou Thurston says Master Police Officer Jamie Acree and Sgt. Brendan Bartley fired at a man who brandished a gun, wounding 33-year-old Laratio Dantzler. Dantzler and 26-year-old Stephen Hayes were later charged with two counts of first-degree murder, attempted robbery and other offenses.

Thurston says both officers are white and Dantzler is black.
