Authorities say the gunman who shot and wounded two Los Angeles sheriff’s deputies as he approached a DUI checkpoint has been apprehended.

Sheriff Jim McDonnell said early Friday the suspect was arrested after holding a hostage in a structure behind a home. McDonnell said the deputies were in critical but stable condition.

The suspect was taken into custody after a SWAT team used tear gas and forced their way into the structure, Fox 11 reported.

The Los Angeles Times reported the incident occurred at about 10:50 p.m. Thursday in the Los Angeles suburb of Bellflower.

The sherrif's department said a motorcycle deputy was following a vehicle as it approached the DUI checkpoint. Suddenly, the driver stopped, got out and fired. The deputy was struck multiple times but fired back.

The driver fled on foot and fired at other deputies, striking one. The motorist then fired at a third group of deputies, who returned fire.
