The Latest on the shooting death of a Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, sheriff's deputy (all times local):

3:20 p.m.

The sheriff's deputy shot to death on a busy suburban New Orleans street has been identified as 51-year-old David F. Michel Jr. (mih-SHELL).

Jefferson Parish Sheriff's spokesman Col. John Fortunato said a suspect in the Wednesday afternoon shooting is in custody. Fortunato says the suspect is at University Medical Center in New Orleans, being treated for minor injuries. Fortunato says the suspect is believed to have been hurt in a struggle with Michel prior to the shooting.

Michel died at that same hospital. Fortunato said the shooting happened in the suburban area of Harvey after Michel stopped the suspect, who was walking along busy Manhattan Boulevard around 12:20 p.m.

Fortunato says witnesses told investigators the suspect pulled a gun from his waistband during a struggle with Michel. Michel was shot several times.

Authorities in Louisiana say a deputy has been shot and killed after stopping a pedestrian on the street in a New Orleans suburb.

Col. John Fortunato, a spokesman for the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office, said at a televised news conference that the deputy died Wednesday afternoon after he was shot in the city of Harvey. He had been taken to a hospital in New Orleans. The identity of the deputy has not been released.

A search was underway for a suspect.
