CHARLESTON, S.C. – A South Carolina judge says he will proceed as scheduled with the murder trial of a former North Charleston police officer on Oct. 31. That's just a week before trial begins across the street for the man accused of killing nine people in a Charleston church.
Judge Clifton Newman Tuesday that Walter Scott's family is entitled to have the matter tried and resolved.
Both the defense and prosecution told the judge they could try the case in October, but noted there could be conflicts with the federal trial of Dylann Roof, the 22-year-old charged with gunning down nine people.
The attorney for former officer Michael Slager also represents several church victims and their families.
But the judge said Slager's shooting of Scott happened first.
