An agreement with school officials in the upstate New York city of Utica is meant to ensure that older refugee children are allowed to attend high school.
The New York Civil Liberties Union had sued the school district in the city over the district's practice of diverting some 17- to 20-year-olds away from public high school and into alternative programs. The lawsuit was filed on behalf of six refugee students.
The agreement announced Thursday establishes high school as the default education choice for all students and requires those who don't want to attend to opt out.
A call to the school district superintendent's office wasn't immediately returned.
New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman brought a similar civil rights lawsuit against Utica in November.
Utica has seen a large influx of immigrants from many countries in recent years.
