Police say a robbery suspect shot a Milwaukee police officer during a chase and was later fatally shot by other officers.

Milwaukee Police Chief Ed Flynn said during a news conference that the officers were dispatched for a report of a robbery at an auto parts store Thursday night.

They arrived and saw a masked man leaving the store. A foot chase followed.

Flynn says during the chase, the suspect fired at the officers, striking one in the chest. The chief says that officer was saved by his body armor.

The chase continued, and the suspect fired again. Flynn says two officers returned fire, striking the man. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The wounded officer is at a hospital in stable condition.
