A northeast Louisiana sheriff says a wanted man pulled a gun while deputies had him surrounded and either shot himself or was shot by a deputy.

Caldwell Parish Sheriff Steve May says Louisiana State Police are investigating the death of Kenneth Magourick (muh-GOH-rick). Court documents list the spelling of his last name as Magouirk (muh-GWIRK).

May says the incident began when two women checked their unoccupied trailer Tuesday. He says Magouirk held a gun to one woman's head, saying he'd been in prison and was wanted.

May says Magouirk soon let them go, and they called authorities.

The sheriff says deputies got Magouirk to put his hands behind his head, but he then picked up a gun. He says Magouirk and a deputy fired about the same time.

The coroner says the body was sent to Little Rock for autopsy.
