State and local police have launched an all-out search for a disabled 34-year-old man they say stepped outside his parents' New York home to throw out the trash and was never seen again.

The Haverstraw Police Department and New York State Police are scouring land and water for Adrian Gokaj, who was last seen April 15 in Pomona, N.Y., approximately 40 miles north of New York City.

"It’s a real mystery," said Dectective George Lutz of the Haverstraw Police Department. "He literally walked out with nothing and hasn't been found."

Gokaj suffered a brain injury in a car accident 15 years ago, which left him mentally impaired, Lutz said.

The man left his home at around 4:20 p.m. on April 15, telling his parents he was taking out the garbage. When he didn't return a few minutes later, Gokaj's parents ran outside looking for him.

"They basically turned around and he was gone," said Lutz. "The family is devastated."

Detectives say a woman spotted Gokaj an hour later in her backyard and about 300 yards from his parents' home.

Since then, police have searched by horseback and helicopter for any sign of the man. Lutz said detectives also checked the banks of the Hudson River.

"We have more than 300,000 people in Rockland County,' Lutz said. "Someone has to have seen him."

Gokaj's family once lived in Lodi, N.J., and Lutz said authorities there have also been alerted.

Gokaj, who is 6-foot-1, was last seen wearing gray sweatpants and a white shirt with blue stripes. Anyone with information on his whereabouts is urged to call the Haverstraw Police Department at 845-354-1500.
