SULPHUR, La. – Authorities say a man suspected of fatally shooting his wife is dead after exchanging gunfire with sheriff's deputies in southwest Louisiana.
Calcasieu Parish Sheriff Tony Mancuso says investigators are trying to determine if the man shot and killed himself or was fatally wounded by a sheriff's deputy after he opened fire on another deputy Thursday morning in the parish's Carlyss community. Mancuso said the deputies weren't injured.
Mancuso says deputies were responding to burglary and trespassing calls when they encountered the gunman. Mancuso said the man fired at least three shots at a deputy in his vehicle.
Mancuso says the man's wife was pronounced dead at the scene, while their 5-year-old daughter was unharmed.
Mancuso refused to identify the races of the gunman or the deputy who shot at him.
