An investigation into a crash that killed four people, including two Des Moines police officers, revealed the wrong-way driver was drunk, had been smoking marijuana and was traveling over 100 mph.
The Iowa Department of Public Safety announced Wednesday that when the March 26 crash occurred on Interstate 80 west of Des Moines, 25-year-old Benjamin Beary had a blood alcohol level of 0.22, far above the 0.08 driving limit, and had recently smoked marijuana. He was driving at 102 mph.
The head-on crash killed Beary, Des Moines officers Susan Farrell and Carlos Puente-Morales, and a prisoner, Tosha Hyatt.
The officers were driving Hyatt from Council Bluffs to Des Moines.
The investigation also revealed that the police car was traveling at 79 mph in a 70 mph zone.
