Vermont is paying $1.5 million to settle a lawsuit by the estate of a suburban New York man released from a life prison sentence after DNA evidence cast doubt on his 1995 conviction on charges he killed his wife.
The state attorney general's office says in a release issued Friday it settled the case originally filed by John Grega but carried on by his estate after he was killed in a 2015 car crash on Long Island. Prosecutors maintain he killed his wife.
Grega was sentenced to life without parole for the 1994 killing of Christine Grega in a Dover condominium. He was released in 2012 after DNA from an unknown man was found in evidence collected from his wife's body.
