Philadelphia police officer shot and wounded by suspect

A Philadelphia police officer has been shot and wounded while trying to stop a car theft.

Officer James McCullough was shot once in the left leg Sunday night.

Police say the 24-year-old officer and his partner were flagged down by a woman who told them that two men were breaking into her car.

Officials say as McCullough approached the woman's car, two men got out and started to run away. The officer tackled one of the suspects, who shot him before taking off. Police say McCullough then fired at the suspect, who continued running.

McCullough is hospitalized in stable condition.

The two suspects were taken into custody a short time later.

McCullough has been on the police force for two years.
