A Massachusetts woman convicted of withholding potentially life-saving medications from her cancer-stricken son has been released from prison while awaiting a new trial.
Kristen LaBrie spent five years behind bars after being convicted of failing to give months of at-home chemotherapy treatments to her son, who died at age 9 in 2009.
The state's highest court last month reversed a judge's order denying her a new trial on an attempted murder charge. On Thursday, a judge granted her request to be released while awaiting retrial.
LaBrie testified that she largely followed doctor's orders during her son's treatment for a form of non-Hodgkins lymphoma. She said she stopped giving him at-home medications during the final treatment phase because she couldn't bear to see how much pain the side effects caused him.
