Authorities in Houston say a deputy constable has been rushed to a hospital after a suspect approached him from behind and shot him six times.

Pamela Greenwood, a spokeswoman for the Harris County precinct seven constable's office, says the incident happened between midnight and 12:15 a.m. Thursday. She says the deputy constable is expected to survive.

Greenwood says the deputy was at a convenience store in midtown Houston and was leaning into his patrol vehicle, talking to a reserve deputy trainee inside when an unknown suspect approached from behind and shot him. She says the officer was hit six times, in the side and back.

He was taken to a hospital. According to Greenwood, doctors believe his injuries are not life-threatening.

The incident is under investigation. No further details were immediately available.
