Chicago police say an officer shot and killed a 16-year-old boy during a chase after the teen turned and pointed a gun.

First Deputy Superintendent John Escalante says Pierre Loury was a gang member and that police had prior contact with him. Loury's mother, Tambrasha Hudson, denied her son had a gun and says "he wouldn't do that."

Loury died Monday night at a hospital. An autopsy found he suffered a gunshot wound to the chest.

Police have said Loury fled a vehicle that officers pulled over because it matched the description of one used in an earlier shooting.

Escalante says the officer who shot Loury will be placed on paid desk duty for at least 30 days.

The shooting is being investigated by the Independent Police Review Authority.
