Two police officers are on paid leave following the deadly shooting of a woman in east Alabama.

The Opelika-Auburn News (http://bit.ly/1MS51Gt ) reports the officers were removed from active patrol following the death of 36-year-old Melissa Boarts on Sunday.

The officers work for the Auburn Police Department, but their names haven't been released.

Authorities say Boarts died of a single gunshot after allegedly charging police while armed with a weapon.

An attorney for the woman's family says she was carrying a pocket knife and calls the shooting unjustified. Auburn's police chief says he believes the officers were justified in their actions.

Police were on the lookout for Boarts after her mother called 911 saying she may be suicidal. She told authorities the woman may cut her wrists with a knife.

Boarts was white. The officers' races weren't immediately released.
