A South Carolina man has been shot to death while he was sitting in a car with his wife.

Cherokee County Coroner Dennis Fowler said in a statement that 35-year-old Carl Francis Burden of Blacksburg was in the passenger seat of the car when he was shot about 4 a.m. Wednesday.

Fowler said the car was parked at a business when the shooting occurred. The coroner says Burden's wife drove him to a hospital in Gaffney, where he was pronounced dead.

An autopsy was scheduled Thursday.

Sheriff Steve Mueller said the shooting did not appear to be a random act.
