Houston police shot and wounded a man they said was firing a pistol at homes, into the air and at officers early Sunday morning, KTRK reported.

The man was shot at least once and was in surgery at Ben Taub Hospital. His condition is unknown.

Officers located the man, who had allegedly been firing the gun indiscriminately, near a church that was emptying out after a service. An officer told the man to put his gun down, but the man began firing at the officer, police told Click2Houston. The officer then fired at the suspect. Neither person was identified.

The officer was not injured, authorities said.

A woman was found dead from a gunshot wound in her house a few blocks from the scene of the officer-involved shooting, according to a KHOU reporter, who cited the woman’s family. It’s unclear if her death was linked to the man who was shot by police, but authorities told The Houston Chronicle they were investigating that possibility.

"(HPD) Homicide is at the home and is there speaking with the family of the female," HPD Spokesperson Victor Senties said. "Given the proximity to the woman being found and the earlier shooting, there may be a possibility that both scenes are related. But that has not been determined yet."
