A Massachusetts DJ who greeted cops raiding the bar where he was working last fall with the hip hop classic, "F--- tha Police" was found guilty this week of disorderly conduct and fined $50.
Kashawn Harris, 25, who spins records under the name DJ Boogy, selected the song as police were clearing out an unruly crowd at Shenanigans Pub, in Westfield, Mass., just before midnight last Oct.17.
Westfield police and fire officials said the bar was packed well above capacity, and the floor was lined with beer and broken glass, according to MassLive.com. When they began asking people to leave, Harris allegedly cranked up the decidedly anti-law enforcement anthem.
Officer Juanita Mejias, who asked for the music to be shut off, eventually wrote Harris up for disorderly conduct, according to MassLive.com.
Harris, of Springfield, was found guilty of disorderly conduct in municipal court on March 11 and fined $50.
“I believed at that time the combination of alcohol, the excessive amount of people in the bar and the song that the DJ chose to play at that time was an intentional act by the DJ to incite the crowd which showed a reckless disregard for public safety,” Officer Juanita Mejias wrote in a police report.
Harris told the paper he was not trying to incite the crowd and that he had planned to play the song before police arrived at the bar.
“For them to even think I was trying to start riots was frustrating for me,” said Harris, who has previously worked at weddings, college events and clubs, according to MassLive.com. “That’s not my kind of background, that’s not where I come from.”
