EMMITSBURG, Md. – The acting president of Mount St. Mary's University says he's committed to moving the Maryland school beyond the turmoil over his predecessor, who likened struggling freshmen to "bunnies" that should be drowned.
Karl Einolf spoke at a forum Monday for students returning from spring break. The Catholic university tweeted some of Einolf's remarks and released a partial text of his speech.
He pledged better communication with students, faculty, staff, administrators and the Board of Trustees.
Einolf is dean of the business school. The board named him acting president Feb. 29 after Simon Newman resigned following less than a year on the job.
A large majority of faculty members demanded Newman's resignation after the student newspaper published a story that included Newman's blunt comments his plans for boosting the student-retention rate.
