The University of Iowa has demoted its interim public safety director days after The Associated Press reported he was accused of interfering in an investigation into a hit-and-run accident involving his stepson.
School officials announced David Visin's reassignment Friday.
Records obtained by AP show Visin refused to pull over when asked by a sheriff's deputy while driving with his stepson, who was suspected in a drunken hit-and-run accident outside a bar they'd just left in June.
Visin instead left his injured stepson at a gas station. The deputy said Visin's actions were evasive.
Visin has apologized, saying he needed to go home for insulin but didn't want colleagues to know he was diabetic. Visin says he hadn't been drinking and knew nothing about the accident until the officer called him.
