Police: Rape suspect fled to Europe, wanted to fight ISIS

A former Alabama jailer is accused of fathering a child with a 15-year-old girl before fleeing to Europe years later and then boasting that he wanted to join Syrian rebels to fight the Islamic State group.

Calhoun County Sheriff Larry Amerson said Thursday that 54-year-old David Alan Pirritano was returned to the United States and is being held on $100,000 bond on rape and other charges.

Amerson says investigators were looking into allegations that a 15-year-old girl was raped by a boyfriend. During that investigation, DNA testing confirmed that the girl's father was Pirritano. The girl's mother was 15 when she was born.

Pirritano was detained after telling a bed and breakfast owner in Croatia that he was a fugitive and needed to get to a border crossing.
