The University of Massachusetts has ended a shelter-in-place order issued after a report of one or two possible "hostile armed" people at a dormitory on its Amherst campus.
The university announced on its website around 7 p.m. Thursday the order had been lifted.
It said earlier campus police had secured a perimeter around Pierpont Hall, which caters to first-year students. It says police interviewed witnesses. It describes two suspects: white males, with one wearing a dark shirt and a gold chain and the other wearing a grey sweatshirt.
A university spokesman says the alert was issued after a student reported seeing a man with a gun in the dormitory.
There are no reports of injuries or shots fired at the university's flagship campus.
