A man who came to the U.S. as a refugee from war-torn Bosnia nearly two decades ago faces possible jail time for concealing his military past and a long criminal rap sheet, including the murder of his Serbian neighbor.
Zdenko Jakisa (zeh-DENK'-oh yah-KEESH'-uh) settled in Minnesota in 1998, obtaining permanent residency four years later. He is set to appear in federal court in St. Paul Thursday for sentencing of up to 15 months in prison.
Jakisa has admitted to failing to disclose when he entered the country that he served in the armed forces of the Croatian Defense Council in Bosnia-Herzegovina. He also omitted that he killed his neighbor by firing an AK-47 into her window and that he had a series of convictions for assault and disturbing the peace.
