Maryland authorities say a sheriff's deputy has shot and wounded a man who appeared to be reaching for a gun in his waistband.
Charles County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Diane Richardson said the shooting happened Thursday afternoon in Waldorf. She said preliminary information indicates the deputy saw a man standing in an intersection next to a car and noticed he had what looked like a gun in his waistband.
Richardson says as the deputy approached the man, the man reached into his waistband. She says the deputy shot the man, striking him in his leg and buttocks.
Some police officers nearby gave the man first aid, and he was taken to a hospital with what Richardson said were non-life-threatening injuries. Richardson says a weapon was recovered at the scene.
