Police around the country are offering classes to average residents on how to deal with the possibility of an active shooter.

The classes are another step in awareness that started with security training for schools after the 1999 Columbine shootings and later expanded to colleges and businesses.

Instructors teach strategies for reacting to the presence of a person with a gun, including a philosophy of running or hiding first or barricading inside a room.

A first-ever class offered by Westerville in suburban Columbus filled up so quickly that a second had to be scheduled for later this month.

Westerville Police Chief Joe Morbitzer says people today understand that threats are real and could happen in their own communities.
