NEW YORK – Prosecutors investigating a young woman's report of being gang-raped by five teenage boys in a New York City playground say they need more time to gather evidence before they decide whether to take the case before a grand jury.
The Brooklyn district attorney's office has six months to investigate. A grand jury would decide whether to indict the boys.
The boys must be released from jail if they aren't indicted within five days of their arrests, which is Friday. Three of the boys are out on bail. One will be released. The fifth will continue to be held on an unrelated assault case.
The 18-year-old woman told police she was attacked after drinking beer with her father in the playground. The boys say the encounter was consensual.
