DALLAS – Soldiers, veterans and thousands of other people have posted on social media in support of an 8-year-old girl who's afraid she'll have to leave the United States because she's Muslim.
Sofia Yassini's story inspired a social media campaign with the hashtag, "#IWillProtectYou."
Her mother, Melissa Yassini, told The Associated Press on Wednesday that the two spend time every evening reading messages of support.
Yassini originally shared her daughter's story after hearing about Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump calling for a ban on all Muslim immigration into the United States.
In fear, Sofia packed a bag with Barbie dolls, a tub of peanut butter and a toothbrush. But her mother — and thousands of strangers — have sought to reassure her.
