Syed Rizwan Farook and his wife, Tashfeen Malik, carried out the Dec. 2 shooting in San Bernardino, California, that killed 14 people. On Thursday, Enrique Marquez, 24, who grew up next door to Farook and had been a close friend, was charged in connection with the case. Here's a look at some key dates related to the attack, as outlined by federal officials:
— July 13, 1986 — Tashfeen Malik is born in Pakistan.
— June 14, 1987 — Syed Rizwan Farook is born in Chicago. His family later moves to Southern California, settling in Riverside.
— 2005 — Marquez and his family move next door to the Farooks, and Syed Rizwan Farook introduces him to Islam.
— 2007-2011 — Marquez converts to Islam in 2007 and by 2011 is spending most of his time at Farook's home, reading, listening to lectures and watching videos involving "radical Islamic content," according to a federal affidavit.
— 2011-2012 — Farook and Marquez plot attacks on Riverside Community College and state Highway 91. Marquez purchases the two assault rifles that are later used in the San Bernardino attack. In January 2012, Farook is hired by San Bernardino County as a trainee environmental health specialist and is promoted two years later. His job mainly involves inspecting restaurants.
— 2013 — Farook and Marquez cease planning any attacks and begin seeing less of each other. Late in the year, Farook and Malik, who met online, discuss jihad and martyrdom privately via the Internet.
— July 2014 — Malik, who studied pharmacology and had been living in Pakistan, passes several government background checks and obtains a K-1 fiancee visa, allowing her to travel to the U.S. so she can marry Farook.
— Aug. 16, 2014 — Farook and Malik are married in Riverside.
— November 2014 — Marquez marries a Russian woman whose sister is married to Farook's brother. Authorities allege the woman marries Marquez fraudulently so she can stay in the U.S.
— Nov. 5, 2015 — Marquez posts to his Facebook page that he leads multiple lives involving "terrorist plots, drugs, antisocial behavior, marriage, might go to prison for fraud, etc."
— mid-November 2015 — Farook abruptly stops going to his mosque, Dar Al Uloom Al Islamiyah in San Bernardino, according to Rahemaan Ali, who attended the same mosque.
— Nov. 29-30, 2015 — Farook goes to a Riverside shooting range.
— Dec. 2, 2015:
— Farook and Malik leave their 6-month-old daughter with his mother and say they are headed to a doctor's appointment.
— 10:58 a.m. — the couple — wearing black commando outfits and face masks and carrying pistols and assault-style rifles — kill 14 people and wound 22 at a holiday luncheon and training session attended by many of Farook's co-workers in San Bernardino.
— 11:14 a.m. — a post on a Facebook page associated with Mailk says "we pledge allegiance" to the leader of the Islamic State' terror organization.
— 3-4 p.m. — Farook and Malik are chased by police and killed in a shootout on a San Bernardino road.
— 4 p.m. — Marquez clocks out of work. He later calls 911, telling the operator his neighbor was the San Bernardino shooter and "used my gun."
— Dec. 3, 2015 — Marquez goes to the emergency room at UCLA Harbor Medical Center. He appears anxious and emotional and tells medical personnel he drank nine beers. He is placed in a psychiatric ward. He tells medical personnel that his friend is the San Bernardino shooter and that "I'm involved."
— Dec. 4, 2015 — The FBI announces it is investigating the shootings as an act of terror. Attorneys for Farook's mother and siblings deny the family had any knowledge of the couple's plans or radicalization.
— Dec. 9, 2015 — The FBI says its investigation determined Malik was radicalized before she met Farook, raising questions about the thoroughness of the vetting process for Malik's K-1 visa.
— Dec. 17, 2015 — Marquez is charged in federal court with three counts: conspiring to provide material support to terrorists in 2011 and 2012, making a false statement in connection with the acquisition of firearms, and visa fraud.
