Pennsylvania man to stand trial on charges he killed officer responding to domestic dispute

A Pennsylvania man has been ordered to stand trial on charges he fatally shot a police officer who responded to a domestic dispute.

Thirty-one-year-old Ray Shetler Jr., of New Florence, apologized outside the courtroom but also seemed to deny shooting St. Clair Township Officer Lloyd Reed on Nov. 28.

Asked whether he was sorry, the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports Shetler said that "everybody in Ligonier knows I'd never do a thing like this."

Ligonier is the town where Wednesday's preliminary hearing was held. Shetler's attorney didn't immediately respond to a call seeking comment.

The 54-year-old officer was the first to arrive when Shetler's girlfriend called 911 claiming he'd assaulted her.

Authorities say Shetler exited the house with a rifle and shot Lloyd, who fired at Shetler after he refused to drop the gun.
