A nonprofit group says it has placed remembrance wreaths on the more than 240,000 headstones at Arlington National Cemetery.

Wreaths Across America said in a statement that over 70,000 volunteers helped place the wreaths Saturday. The Maine-based group says the green wreaths, each with a red bow, are a gesture of gratitude. The wreaths placed at Arlington were among more than 900,000 wreaths placed at over 1,000 locations nationwide Saturday, which is National Wreaths Across America Day.

The wreath-laying tradition at Arlington began in 1992 when a businessman from Maine, Morrill Worcester, delivered 5,000 donated wreaths to the cemetery. He and others formed the non-profit Wreaths Across America in 2007.
