Authorities say a man was shot and killed and a deputy suffered a superficial head wound in a shootout in a South Carolina apartment.

Greenville County Sheriff Steve Loftis said deputies responded to a possible robbery around 1 a.m. Thursday after a woman reported she heard a gunshot next door to her apartment near Greenville.

Loftis says the law officers knocked on the next-door apartment several times, shouting they were deputies, then broke down the door.

The sheriff says a man inside had a gun pointed at the door and fired one shot that hit the deputy. At least one of the three officers fired back, killing the suspect.

The names and races of the people involved have not been released.

Loftis says the deputy should recover from his wound.
