Prosecutors say they want the former highest ranking uniformed officer of the Suffolk County Police Department detained as a danger to the community until he is tried for allegedly beating a prisoner and covering up the crime.
Prosecutors will make their oral arguments at a Friday bail hearing for James Burke. News agencies sent a letter to federal Judge Leonard Wexler in Central Islip (EYE'-slihp) Thursday, challenging his plans to close the hearing to the public.
Burke's attorney has said he is not guilty.
Burke is accused of beating a prisoner who stole sex toys and pornography from his SUV and of plotting a cover-up.
Prosecutors say in a letter to Wexler that Burke is able to instill fear in others, has vowed retribution and should be detained.
