The 3-year-old stepson of a California Highway Patrol officer grabbed a .22 caliber rifle and shot his 15-year-old brother in the foot during a game of hide-and-seek on Saturday, cops said.

The Stockton CHP officer, who has not been identified, told FOX40 that his 15-year-old stepson is recovering well. The teen was taken to urgent care shortly after the shooting at around 8 p.m.

The 3-year-old got the rifle out of his stepdad’s closet, police said.

No charges have been filed yet in the case.

“I don’t think children should ever be able to have access to firearms,” neighbor Jim Bertilacchi told FOX40.

Another neighbor, who didn’t want to be identified, said she was “saddened” by the shooting.

“Certainly it’s concerning that something like that happens in any neighborhood,” she said.
