NEW ORLEANS – Four Louisiana correctional officers have been indicted on charges they violated the civil rights of an inmate, resulting in her death.
The U.S. Department of Justice said in a news release Thursday that a grand jury indicted Capt. Andre Dominick, Cpl. Timothy Williams, and deputies Debra Becnel and Lisa Vaccarella for deliberately ignoring serious medical needs that led to the death of 19-year-old Nimali Henry.
Henry died April 1, 2014, after being found unresponsive on the floor of her cell at the St. Bernard Parish Prison. She had been in custody since March 21 on charges of disturbing the peace, simple battery and unauthorized entry after a domestic dispute.
Each of the defendants also was charged with making false statements to the FBI.
