Authorities in suburban Phoenix say a handcuffed and shackled inmate was seriously injured after he kicked out the rear window of a police transport van on a freeway and got out of the moving vehicle.

It was unclear if he jumped or fell Wednesday from the city of Gilbert police van headed on Interstate 10 toward a Maricopa County jail in downtown Phoenix.

Gilbert police Lt. Hugh White says the man was recaptured and hospitalized in serious condition.

Arizona Department of Public Safety spokesman Bart Graves said the inmate had head injuries and scrapes. Graves says the man was combative toward state troopers and fire department personnel who responded.

Details on why the inmate was in custody weren't immediately available.
