A man has been shot and killed by a Florida sheriff's deputy after authorities say the man pulled a gun on deputies during a struggle at a supermarket parking lot.

Manatee County Sheriff's Office spokesman Dave Bristow tells the Bradenton Herald (http://bit.ly/1SI4GE8 ) that two stun guns were ineffective early Thursday in subduing 34-year-old Randy A. Smith. Deputies say Smith struck one of them in the head and pulled a handgun before he was fatally shot.

Bristow says deputies had approached Smith because he was inside a car that was suspiciously parked in a lot in Manatee when all surrounding businesses were closed.

Bristow says it's unclear where Smith was holding the gun.

Bristow says heroin and cocaine that appeared to be packaged for sale were found on Smith, who died shortly afterward at a hospital.
