Mississippi Attorney General Jim Hood says an inmate is accused of seeking money from other prisoners' families on fake promises that their loved ones could get early release.

Hood said Wednesday that 27-year-old Jebarious Neal of Hazlehurst, who's in the Jefferson County jail, is charged with false pretense.

Neal is accused of calling inmates' families, pretending to be a public official and demanding they pay money into a fake state account with a promise that the inmate could get out early.

Hood says Neal used a cellphone that had been smuggled into the jail.

Neal is already serving a 30-year sentence for burglary and larceny.

Hood says 37-year-old Tiffany McVane of Hazlehurst was arrested as a co-conspirator in the case. It was not immediately clear whether she has an attorney.
