Police say an Atlanta-area college is on lockdown after a violent crime near campus.

Georgia Gwinnett College says in alerts on its website Monday morning that "a violent crime has occurred close to the campus." The alerts indicate that police were closing the campus, and staff and students are to take shelter.

Photos from the Atlanta Journal-Constitution (http://on-ajc.com/1ONguqI ) show road signs telling people, "Campus is on lockdown."

The four-year college is in Lawrenceville, just northeast of Atlanta. Its website says it has nearly 11,000 students.
