A volunteer usher at a church in Florida apparently overlooked the commandment stating “Thou shalt not steal.”

A Marion County Sheriff’s Office sting caught Mario Condis, 60, allegedly pilfering $349.05 from the offering baskets at Blessed Trinity Catholic Church on Sunday, according to the Gainesville Sun.

Condis was arrested on one count of grand theft and three counts of petit theft. He posted a $3,500 bond and was released from jail Sunday evening.

“It's bold and disappointing that someone would go into a church and take advantage, first of all,” Marion County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Lt. Ryan Robbins told FOX35, “and then while people are praying and worshipping at that moment."

Church leaders were reportedly suspicious that a thief was in their midst, and so they asked deputies to set up surveillance cameras, News6 reported. The footage allegedly caught Condis grabbing cash from masses on Oct. 18, Oct. 25 and Nov. 1, according to the Sun.

Deputies arrested the usher as he approached the altar. When officers pulled cash from his pockets, Condis allegedly said it was his money and that he intended to put the money on the altar.

"It's just amazing someone would come into church and be that disrespectful,” Robbins said.
