Authorities in southern California spent much of Wednesday in a standoff with a man who was reportedly firing a high-powered rifle from an apartment window in the vicinity of the San Diego airport, prompting the Federal Aviation Administration to bar incoming flights from landing for several hours.
Police Lt. Scott Wahl said the domestic violence suspect walked out of the apartment complex Wednesday afternoon, ending the more than five-hour standoff.
Officers responding to a domestic violence call heard gunshots shortly after 9 a.m. at the complex in an upscale neighborhood near Little Italy.
The San Diego Union-Tribune reported that police flooded the area in Bankers Hill to isolate the gunman. No injuries were reported, but a nearby elementary school was placed on lockdown.
Authorities asked people in the area to stay inside and keep away from windows as they surrounded the complex. Dozens of officers with assault rifles were seen running down the street, and gunshots were heard.
The Federal Aviation Administration lifted its orders barring all flights from landing after the gunman moved into a part of his apartment where no longer posed a threat to air traffic.
