PRESTONSBURG, Ky. – Police say a man who ran from a traffic stop shot an officer in the chest and then barricaded himself inside a home for more than five hours.
Kentucky State Police Trooper Steven Mounts says the officer, Adam Dixon from the small eastern Kentucky town of Prestonsburg, is in stable condition Wednesday morning.
Mount says the suspect, Robert Powers, fled from Prestonsburg police in a vehicle and then on foot Tuesday night. Mount says that when officers tried to subdue him, he pulled out a gun and shot Dixon.
Police say Powers barricaded himself in the home — which wasn't his — while Dixon was airlifted to a hospital.
Mount says Powers also was shot and suffered injuries that aren't considered life-threatening. Mount says officers opened fire on Powers after he shot Dixon, but he didn't give details on how Powers was hit or injured. He's charged with attempted murder of a police officer.
