The body of a Minnesota sheriff's deputy killed with his own gun in a hospital was returned to his hometown where residents gathered for a procession and candlelight vigil Monday.

Sixty-year-old Steven Sandberg was killed Sunday at St. Cloud Hospital where he was watching a patient who authorities say had terrorized his wife and apparently attempted suicide. The Aitkin County Sheriff's Office says that patient, Danny Hammond. grabbed Sandberg's gun and killed him. Authorities used a stun gun on Hammond who later died.

Hundreds gathered in the Town of Aitkin Monday to remember Sandberg. KSTP-TV reports many said Sandberg made a big difference in the small town. He was a regular at the local fire department, taught Sunday School at his church and was a husband and father.

His funeral is set for Friday.
