A Michigan state trooper shot and killed a man who wounded a sheriff’s deputy with a crossbow, Michigan State Police said.
An arrow struck the deputy, a member of the Montcalm County Sheriff's Department, in the side. He was airlifted to a Grand Rapids hospital where he was listed in stable condition after surgery, Fox 17 and the Associated Press reported Saturday.
The deputy, the trooper and a Lakeview officer had gone to the man’s Cato Township home late Friday to execute an arrest warrant, authorities said.
The man, 40, shot at the officers with a crossbow, striking the deputy, they said.
The state trooper then returned fire with his gun, hitting the man at least once. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The victim was wanted on an assault charge, Wood-TV reported Saturday.
“This is an unfortunate, tragic situation, but certainly highlights the dangers that our law enforcement officers face everyday,” State Police Lt. Rob Davis told the station. “In terms of our policy, obviously, an officer that reasonably believes that there’s eminent danger of death or bodily harm has the right to defend himself or others.”
State Police Lt. Kevin Sweeney said the trooper has been with the state police for more than two years. He had been placed on administrative duty while the shooting is being investigated.
Cato Township is about 50 miles northeast of Grand Rapids.
